Good work on older houses

Monday to Friday 7:00 to 4:30. Call, or stop by the shop on Mill Race Road.

We are a crew of four working out of a shop on Mill Race Road: Erik, two carpenters and an apprentice. We build kitchens and bathrooms, decks and porches, and we do the slow, careful repair of rot and water damage. If a floor has gone soft or a ceiling has started to drip, call us. We come out for free, look at it with you, and tell you plainly what it needs.

We book a few weeks ahead

After the walk-through you get a written quote inside a week. Call us for the next open start.

Services

What we take on

Kitchens, bathrooms, porches, rot and the small jobs nobody else wants. We price each one in writing after we have seen it.

  1. 01

    Kitchens

New cabinets and counters, or a full gut down to the studs. We plan around the walls you have, which in an older house are rarely square.

Usually 4 to 8 weeks on site
  2. 02

    Bathrooms

Tile, tubs and showers, and new subfloor where the old one has gone soft. If we need to open the floor to give you a fair price, we say so first.

    Usually 2 to 4 weeks
  3. 03

    Decks and porches

Front porches rebuilt, new decks, steps and railings that meet code. Cedar or treated lumber, painted or left to weather.

    Usually 1 to 3 weeks
  4. 04

    Rot and water damage

Sills, rim joists, window frames, the floor by the dishwasher. We find where the water came from and fix that as well, so the repair lasts.

    Often a few days
  5. 05

    Small fix-it jobs

A door that sticks, a loose stair rail, a storm window, trim. We keep a standing list and work through it on short days.

    Half a day or more
New unpainted wooden front steps and handrail on a grey clapboard house, a spirit level on a tread and a carpenter crouching beside them

How a job goes

  1. 1

Call or send the form. We set a time to walk through the house with you. It is free.

  2. 2

Inside a week you get a written quote, with what we found and what we would leave alone.

  3. 3

We set a start date with you, cover your floors, and close up tidy every night.

About

Erik and the crew

Four of us, one barn-red truck, and a shop a block up from the river.

A carpenter at a heavy workbench in an old barn, one hand flat on a pine board while the other draws a pencil line along a straightedge, shavings on the bench

Erik Halvorsen grew up in Ashby Falls and learned the trade on the houses here, most of them built before anyone thought about vapor barriers. He runs the crew: two carpenters and an apprentice who is learning it the slow way, by doing it right.

We work out of the shop and yard at 418 Mill Race Road. If you see the barn-red truck in a driveway on your street, that is us, and you are welcome to come and ask what we are doing.

Most of our work is on older houses, and most of it starts with a phone call after something has gone wrong. We would rather fix the cause than cover the symptom, and we will tell you when a job is not worth doing.

What you can count on

The same four things on every job, from a sticking door to a new kitchen.

  1. 01

We show up when we said, at 7:00

  2. 02

Floors covered, site closed up every night

  3. 03

    A written quote that holds

If we find something behind a wall, we stop and show you before we go on.

  4. 04

    Straight answers

Including when the honest answer is to leave it alone for another year.
